On Friday afternoon, 18.9.26 I was phoned by a lady who said she worked for Fox manufacturing, and their monitoring of my inverter had shown some irregularities, and they wanted to send an engineer to have a look. She said George Cook of 07983 757737 would call on Monday morning at 11. On Monday 21.9.26 ‘George Cook’ arrived. He didn’t offer me any ID, and I asked who he worked for. He said he was employed by SCS – Solar Commissioning Scheme, and that he had been asked by Fox to do a ‘diagnostic report’. As I was a bit suspicious, I kept a close eye on him throughout. He said the Fox monitoring had shown a period of disconnection. At the inverter he removed the switch covers on both the input and output side, and applied a voltmeter. He put the covers back. He said the output was higher than it should be at 240 volts. He said ideally it should be 220-230 volts. He wanted to check this inside the house – I showed him the fuse box, but he didn’t touch anything there. He asked to measure at one of my power circuit plugs, and he stuck his voltmeter prongs into one in the hall. He said the voltage was high, adding that it was the same as at the output side of the inverter. He said this voltage would diminish the life of my domestic appliances, and suggested he quoted me for the provision of a ‘voltage regulator’ – adding that he would also provide information about any government grants available towards the cost of installing a regulator. I made it clear that I wouldn’t commit to the purchase of a regulator today, and that I would consult yourselves as installers, because I’d expect you to get the voltage right as part of the installation – and if it was wrong, I’d expect you to fix it under warranty. He made a phone call to a colleague requesting the quote, and he then made a fairly hasty exit, saying he’d send the quote by email. I’ve had no email. He was a pleasant enough young man – but probably got the message that I was viewing him carefully, with some suspicion. On reflection I realise there was no link between his original story that Fox had identified a disconnection, and his concern about the voltage level, and his sales pitch about getting a regulator.
