Called me and when answered it was a recorded message stating that there had been "unauthorised activity on this number" ans that my "contract will be cancelled within 24 hours". Then came the red flag that should alert anybody. The message went on to give a language prompt which included "Press 1 for Mandarin, Press 2 for English, Press 3 for Chinese... I hung up at that point.
The first thing is that my service provider would never call using an automated (female) recording then follow with key prompts, they would get an agent to call me personally. The second point is that the optionsfor languages was weird... Mandorin and Chinese, no Welsh? and the third point is that the call came from a Vodaphone registered number and not one of my network's numbers. Additionally, should my network call the caller ID will show as being my network.
The way this scam works is that criminals clone a UKJ mobile number and as soon as a fool presses one of the keys on his / her keypad the call is redirected to a premium rate number in afar off country and the conned one is then billed at £x per minute for the call.
If you get any similar calls that threaten you with disconnection, contract cancellation etc. do not touch the keypad on the phone, simply hang up and potentially save £10s if not £100s in costs for a premium rate call to somewhere like Albania.
